Your Pocket Life Coach
By Carole Gaskell
Book Review of "Your Pocket Life Coach"
Your Pocket Life Coach by Carole Gaskell is a small book packed with ideas and exercises to work through to help you improve your life. The book is divided into an Introduction and 10 chapters covering different areas:
Chapter 1. Jump Start the Next Phase of Your Life
Chapter 2. Create a Vibarant Vision and Genuine Goals
Chapter 4: Spring Clean Your Life
Chapter 5: Boost Your Confidence
Chapter 6: Strengthen your Relationships
Chapter 7: Tackle your Obstacles
Chapter 8: Gain Focus and Achieve More in Less Time
Chapter 9: Shape Up Your Finances
Chapter 10: Take Action, Maintain Momentum and Flow
Each chapter contains an overview of the issue or life area followed by a short assessment quiz before you go on to try out the exercises in the section. Gaskell says that you can either work through the assignments in the book in the order in which they are written or else focus on the sections that appeal to you most. In my view most people will benefit more from focusing on a particular section or chapter than from trying to follow the exercises from cover to cover as that would require an enormous amount of self discipline.
Each quiz or assignment is intended to take 10 minutes to complete and Gaskell follows the time honoured sensible advice of suggesting that you break your goals down and seek to move forward in bite-sized chunks, reminding us that you can eat an elephant if you do it one bite at a time. Whether most of us would want to eat an elephant at all is not considered. This may be symptomatic of one of the issues around presenting a generic life coaching guide: how can you ensure that the advice you give is not only sensible but also relevant to the specific needs of each individual when you cover such a wide range of topics? One way to get round this problem of giving the material coherence, focus or relevance would be to structure the book around a specific theory or to create chapters that follow on logically from one another towards an end goal (the latter is the approach adopted in my own generic self coaching programme which moves sequentially towards developing a personal quality of life plan). Gaskell doesn't obviously adopt either of these approaches so her book is more like a kind of '100 great life coaching exercises' book loosely divided into different subject areas.
My favourite part of the book is chapter 7, "Tackle Your Obstacles" and in particular the section where she encourages you to think about what are the limiting beliefs that you have and what empowering beliefs you might substititute for them. If you are someone whose own negative self talk, fear or core beliefs hamper your progress then the simple exercises in this section may help you to move forward - although in a book of this size the assignments are an introduction to an important topic rather than a full guide around it.
Your Pocket Life Coach is a good introduction to ideas and exercises that many life coaches use in their work. It is a pocket book of exercises and tips provided at a pocket price. As such it represents good value and you may find particular assignments that help you to unlock your future or move forward. However if you have a specific issue which is troubling you, you may prefer to look for a more in-depth book or coach to help you with that issue in a way that is of direct relevance to you.
